Sally Fawcett, What Could it Be?, EK Books/Exisle Publishing, 23 May 2016, 32pp., $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781925335026
This book will especially absorb young children who like the challenge of careful observation in order to identify “hidden” shapes. Double-page spreads include a clear depiction of a geometric shape, from a simple circle to a hexagon, while the following double-page spread is a detailed scene that includes numerous examples of that particular shape and encourages a treasure hunt to identify all the examples. The often humorous scenes range from a family kitchen to a snowfield but continuity is maintained via the young boy who features in each picture. This well-produced hardback comes with directions on how to make templates for each of the seven shapes. The author’s website has teacher’s notes aimed to help youngsters ”think outside the square”. Ages 3-8.
