Various authors, The Puffin Book of Bedtime Stories, Puffin Books, Australia, July 2019, 256 pp., RRP $29.99 (hbk), ISBN 9780143796732
Children and bouncing pets who won’t settle down, fear of that first night in a big bed, of the dark, of learning to fly; counting Australian animals, hibernation and a dream-like early morning walk; eight bedtime stories that will have readers and listeners alike snuggling into sleepiness. With stories first published as early as 1989 (Jesse by Tim Winton), these classics will be treasured across generations and I think the compilation will appeal to grandparents. Illustration styles occasionally look a little dated but original publication dates are well mixed and there is a pleasing range of styles, from Renee Treml’s stunning scraperboard monotones to Stephen Michael King’s refreshing watercolours. An appendix spread tells the reader about the authors and illustrators. For a cosy, tried and tested formula from Puffin Books, readers will find this a safe buy to gift and share for many favourite ends of the day.
