The Monarchs is Morgan and Paige’s final book in The Ravens duology. The novel follows two sorority sisters, Scarlett and Vivi, as they navigate college life and attempt to balance the mundane and the supernatural aspects of their lives. Both girls are members of the secretive and exclusive Kappa Rho Nu of Westerly College, a home to a powerful coven of witches. Scarlett has just become the newly appointed head of the sorority after a traumatic and unforeseeable incident results in the death of her predecessor. She wants nothing more than to put the past behind her and show her sorority sisters that she is deserving of her new presidency, yet it seems those past events cannot be so easily escaped. Strange things start happening and magic appears to be running rampant. Everyone on campus is on edge and few people are acting like themselves. With the help of her Little, Vivi, Scarlett rushes to find answers before anymore life-threatening disasters can occur.
Witchcraft, magic and mystery are at the forefront of The Monarchs, making for a fun and easy read. The few twists and turns as well as the creative spin keeps things interesting. Love and loyalty, between sorority sisters and some cute love interests, are two constant themes throughout the novel which make the characters more relatable.
The Monarchs is recommended to readers fourteen years and older. Anyone looking for a fantasy novel with some mystery and romance would enjoy this novel.
Danielle Paige, co-author of The Monarchs, is also the author of Dorothy Must Die, an enjoyable, quirky and imaginative twist on the well-known Wizard of Oz tale. Another excellent novel to sit down and relax with. Kass Morgan wrote The 100, a book that was successfully adapted to a Netflix series. It’s not surprising that The Ravens series is an entertaining and thrilling read.
