This is the second book in the graphic novel trilogy about the Odds. In the first book, Kip’s imaginary friends have come to life and now they take over the small 2-bedroom flat while Dad is trying to develop ideas for his new graphic novel. Chaos continues to rule as the characters fight amongst and with each other. Dad books a cabin in the woods to find some peace and stimulation. The Woman in the Suit wants to know all about the ten other characters, but even as they travel the Woman in the Suit seems to know where they are going. How is this possible?
Superficially this is a very silly story about strange characters acting boisterously but during a conversation Kip has with her Dad we learn that each of the Odds represents one of her strengths or weaknesses, including fear, tolerance, anger, acceptances. The Woman in the Suit is another one ‘imagined to life’: Kip’s power.
I enjoyed the simplicity of the language and the drawings, which remind me of a colouring book, but it’s more than that. There are lots of discussion points when read at a deeper level, or very basic ideas, when read superficially. I love the details of the journey in the van and the mayhem going on. Many will recognise the constant refrain of “Are we there yet?”
Young fans of simple graphic novels are going to enjoy this book.
