Adrian Beck, Furball (Spy Cat #1), Larrikin House, October 2022, 160 pp., RRP $14.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781922804006
Furball and his sidekicks Jade, the karate kid and Kit the gadget guy are super sleuths. Well, sort of. They are the good guys who work for the secret organisation Meow-6 and fight the bad guys who work for the evil organisation Klawz. But what do you do when the leader of the group spends more time fussing about how he looks in his tux and prioritises fish tacos and sleep over, well, just about everything? Lucky his helper sleuths are around to save the day.
When Furball, Jade and Kit find themselves in the middle of a dastardly plot by Leadfoot and his evil gang to drain the local water park of water they will need to draw on all their super spy skills to save the day. Can they do it?
The first in the Furball series by Adrian Beck won’t disappoint; action packed with lots of gags, puns and bad jokes that will appeal to young readers. The graphic nature of the narrative, use of speech bubbles and varying font size, help make this a fun and accessible introduction to independent reading. It may also appeal to reluctant readers.
Adrien Beck has also co-authored, with Nicole Hayes, the AFL Little Legends series.
Furball (Spy Cat #1) is highly recommended for home or school library. Suitable for ages 6+
