The difficult task of learning to count is made enjoyable when combined with the fun of colourful dinosaurs. Starting at the number 10, a dinosaur disappears with each double page opening until there are none left by the final page. A rhyme explains the reduction in number and hints at the next number to follow, allowing the child to feel the success of being able to predict the pattern of the numbers.
The use of rhyme in conjunction with clear bold font on a white background makes the text very accessible and easy for the child to read along with an adult. Karen Mounsey-Smith’s illustrations are bright and vibrant with the strong presence of primary colours while appealing expressions give the cute dinosaurs character and charm. Interest is added by the child reader being challenged to find the hidden ladybirds hidden on each page which encourages the application of counting skills.
Suitable for preschool children, Ten Tricky Dinosaurs is an attractive and lively picture book that is a welcome addition to the world of counting.
