MILLER, Kayla, Crunch (Click, #5), Walker Books Australia, December 2022, 224 pp., RRP $17.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781760655181
Crunch is the fifth book in Kayla Miller’s entertaining graphic novel series about the perky Olive navigating the challenges of Grade 6.
In Crunch, Olive enthusiastically takes on too much – guitar lessons, school council, a short film production – all while trying to keep up with homework and being a good friend. But when she’s hoodwinked into joining her best friend Willow as a Berry Scout, it’s one commitment too many. Olive becomes tired and is in danger of burning out.
Luckily, her guitar teacher steps in as a compassionate mentor. She talks with Olive about the need to prioritise and to ask for help when needed. Olive courageously resigns from Berry Scouts and finds balance. This theme of over-committing is one that will resonate with the target audience – mid to late primary aged kids. Back matter includes how to make a to-do list and assign priorities.
Crunch is an easy, enjoyable read that is likely to be gobbled up by Olive collectors and new readers alike.
