Russell Irving, The Lonely Jacaranda, Russell Irving, March 2022, 24 pp., RRP $25,99 (pbk), ISBN 9780645238228
The Lonely Jacaranda is an uplifting fable which celebrates acceptance and the importance of embracing our unique gifts and differences. Author and environmental educator Russel Irving uses this charming story of the spectacular Jacaranda tree to explore the alienation and prejudices experienced by those far from home and how it is that small acts of acceptance and friendship can lead to truly spectacular outcomes for everybody.
Jaca, the lonely Jacaranda tree, lives far from home, dropping her flowers and leaves like teardrops. The nearby trees all laugh at her and wonder why she drops all her leaves. Meanwhile the birds are quick in letting Jaca know how much they prefer the White Fig, the Flame tree, or the Eucalyptus to her bare branches and strange purple flowers.
Some of the birds are not so harsh and feel pity for Jaca. The wise Grey Butcherbird decides that it would cheer the lonely Jacaranda up if they all ate her fruit and scattered her seeds far and wide. Before long, little Jacaranda trees spring up across the town and Jaca doesn’t feel lonely anymore. In spring the townsfolk begin to admire the streets of purple flowers and in time word spreads and there are festivals held in honour of the stunning Jacarandas. People start to flock to the little town which is painted purple with pride.
Beautifully written with simple yet stunning illustrations, this touching story packs a powerful message and invites young readers (5 years and over) to connect with nature and Australia’s indigenous heritage. The title also contains a useful information section for parents or educators about Grafton’s spring Jacaranda Festival; the origins of the Jacaranda tree; and the native trees featured in the story.
A wonderful picture book for educators wanting to explore social topics of intolerance, inclusivity, and nurture in nature.
