Paterson, Allison, Customs and Traditions of the Australian Defence Force (Australia Remembers #2), Big Sky Publishing, March 2021, 70 pp., RRP $14.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781922265227
In this latest installment of the Australia Remembers series, Allison Paterson introduces some of the customs and traditions of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to young readers. Broken down into many chapters with headings like Rank and Names, Uniforms and Mascots, this is an informative and accessible information book. Each page is bright and colourful, with interesting photographs breaking up the short sections of writing. The text is in a larger font, and different break-out boxes of information, such as Did you know? and Fact Fact! have a consistent design to make them easy to spot and absorb.
Paterson has done careful research, and the book has been checked by members of the ADF, so the information is as factual and reliable as possible. I shared this book with an ADF family I know, and they enjoyed it and could find no fault. At the end of the book are some suggested activities, a glossary, and an index, making it ideal for use in the classroom. This would be a useful resource in primary school and public libraries.
