Sue Degennaro, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Scholastic Australia, September 2019 24 pp., RRP $17.99 (hbk), ISBN 978743815878
Illustrator Sue DeGennaro has given Goldilocks a makeover for a new generation with this instalment in Scholastic’s Classic Fairytales.
DeGennaro, best know for The Pros and Cons of Being a Frog which was shortlisted for a CBCA award, has illustrated the well-known tale in pencil and watercolour. Using a blue-pallet, DeGennaro has created a cosy world for the blonde-haired adventurer to inhabit. The bears are not too scary – in fact Papa bear wears a bow tie – and Goldilocks is cute and cheeky.
The story is the traditional tale and ends with Goldilocks running away into the forest. It introduces young children to classic fairytales and makes for a good bedtime read. It could be used to generate discussion with young children about stranger danger and manners.
