John Lennon (text), Jean Jullien (illus.), Imagine, Francis Lincoln/Allen & Unwin, Oct 2017, 32pp., $24.99 (hbk), ISBN: 9781847808967
Released on World Peace Day, this picture book stylishly illustrated by French graphic artist Jean Jullien (This Is Not A Book), brings the words of Lennon’s famous lyrics back to poignant life. The format is reminiscent of a wordless story. Text floats alongside pictures that re-interpret the song as a pigeon’s journey away from the crowded city to a simpler existence. Bold black ink brush marks outline a limited palette of calming digital colours. The pigeon of peace, with CND logo on his bag and twig in his beak, encourages fellow birds to be accepting of each other, to share and spread the love. When he seems tired and takes a rest, other birds take up the twig and join in. The website asks readers to share a message of peace, and royalties are donated to Amnesty International. A simple yet affirming message of peace and unity for the modern world.
Suitable for readers 3 years old to adult.
