David Elliott (text), Melissa Sweet (illus.), Baabwaa & Wooliam, Walker Books Australia, 1 Sept 2017, 40pp., $24.99 (hbk), ISBN: 9780763660741
Author David Elliott takes us on an adventurous journey of friendship using humor and stereotypes; accompanied by Melissa Sweet’s inviting and varied illustrations.
It’s not typical for a sheep to befriend a wolf; let alone two. But while challenging themselves to steer away from their norm, Baabwaa and Wooliam find their adventures lead them to discover a third, rather interesting looking sheep.
From here a friendship develops with each member of this ‘flock’ purposefully applying their skills and hobbies to support one another. Wooliam teaches the wolf to read, Baabwaa knits sweaters and leg warmers, and the wolf engages his woolly friends in a taste of adventure from time to time.
Not only does this story provide a giggle it also creates an opportunity to challenge the reader to reflect on their judgement of others, their involvement in their community, and valuing the differences others bring to life.
